Our Target Is To Qualify From The Group Stage – Black Maidens Head Coach Joe Nana Adarkwah
The head coach of Ghana’s U-17 female national team, the Black Maidens, Joe Nana Adarkwah, has said the team’s ultimate target is to advance from the group stage of the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Ghana kept their qualification hopes alive after a thrilling 3-3 draw with Brazil in their second Group C match on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé.
The Black Maidens came from behind twice to earn a valuable point after losing their opening match 3-0 to Norway. Brazil took an early lead in the 7th minute through Nicolly, but Ghana responded with goals from Rafia Osman in the 31st minute and Gloria Ameaa four minutes later. Brazil levelled before half-time through Kaillany Rafinah and retook the lead in the 57th minute via Indy, before substitute Priscilla Mensah struck in the 85th minute to secure a point. The equalizer was assisted by Player of the Match Jessica Appiah Asamoah.
Speaking after the match, Coach Adarkwah expressed pride in his players’ performance, saying they played well against a tough opponent and created many chances despite their youth.
“We did very well. We are in one of the toughest groups, but I’m proud of my girls. After equalising, we had so many chances, but they are young, they are learning, so we have a lot to do with the girls, but I’m happy for them,” he said.
On the current atmosphere in camp following the draw, he assured that morale is high and that financial obligations to the team have been met.
“Per-diems paid and motivation is high in camp. Everything is fine in camp after yesterday’s 3-3 draw with Brazil,” he disclosed.
Looking ahead to the decisive final Group C game against Canada, the coach acknowledged the strength of the Canadians but stressed that his team is determined to secure all three points to keep their qualification dream alive.
“They are a strong team, we are going all out and make sure we get the maximum 3 points,” he stated.
He also appealed to Ghanaian fans for continued support and expressed optimism about the team’s growth, noting that competing at the world stage comes with challenges.
“We are like them, but Brazil are up there. We are getting stronger, and we will get there,” he added, calling on Ghanaians to keep supporting the girls.
